THE DETAILS
Ever wonder what it would be like if there was a Making the Band sort of show, but with improvisors instead of crazies with valley-deep chin clefts?  Auditioning for a PHIT house team is the closest thing you'll probably get to that TV show.  If you perform longform improv as part of a PHIT house team, the theater will provide all of these awesome benefits:

  • A fantastic director for your team! (Choose from Improv Incubator Founder Rick Horner, PHIT Executive Director Greg Maughan, and the Arden Theatre Company's Scott Sheppard).
  • Great rehearsal space! (House Teams have rehearsal space paid for by PHIT - no more rehearsing in your mother's basement).
  • Performances all over the place! (at The Shubin Theatre, Fergie's Pub, The 11th Annual Philly Fringe Festival, and a variety of improv venues festivals along the East Coast - PHIT will cover some or all travel costs for out-of-town shows).
  • Intensive training with nationally recognized improv directors several times a year! (from NYC, Chicago, and everywhere else... top talent working exclusively with our top talent).
  • Advertising and promotions handled! (We have a great PR intern who will maintain websites, social networking accounts, press packets, photos, and tapes - while also handling listings and press releases).
  • And more! (How much more? Who knows... in PHIT's mind, the sky is the limit)!
Auditions are open to anyone with a desire to be part of improv house team. No prior improv experience is necessary, although we won't lie and say that having some experience will make things easier for you. We'll also be open about past and current invovlement in classes being considered by the directors and the theater - but we are looking for those people who did class at UCB five years ago and then never joined the group to crawl out of the woodwork and come on out!

At present there is no monetary compensation for being a member of a House Team, but that may change in the future. In place of money we offer the best training - by far - in the metro-Philadelphia region, kickass performance opportunities, a warm and rapidly growing community of performs, and free drinks to performers after their shows at the nearest watering hole.

Auditions will be in groups of approx. 8 people, and last 30 minutes. They will be taking place between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday, April 28 at the Arden Theatre (40 N. 2nd St.). You'll be asked to arrive 10 minutes early with any resume or headshot (if you've got one) or just yourself (if you don't). We'll have you play with pencils and forms, then whisk you in for a low-key set of warmups and exercises, followed by some scenework. You need not bring a prepared monologue - this is improv! Callbacks will be held May 5th from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Shubin Theatre (407 Bainbridge St.).

If you'd like to audition, email us at contact@phillyimprovtheater.com by 5 p.m. on April 24, 2008. We'll get you all the rest of your details.

About PHIT

The Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) is the only longform improvisation theater in the Metro Philadelphia area. Founded in 2005, PHIT is a nonprofit theater company that embraces the art of improvisation as an end rather than a means - creating and producing improv, sketch, and alternate comedy shows in the tradition of theaters like Chicago's Second City and New York's Upright Citizens Brigade. To further this philosophy, PHIT offers it's own take take on the theories and concepts behind good improvisation in a full curriculum of classes for performers of all skill levels taught by local talent and through master classes with distinguished performers and teachers from all over the world (including Impro author Keith Johnstone, Joe Bill and Mark Sutton of The Second City, and former SNL writer Ali Farahnakian). In addition to performing as part of PHIT's weeklong residency at The Shubin Theatre each month, local improv troupes produced and presented by PHIT have toured extensively on the East Coast and performed in festivals throughout North America.
