Philly Improv Theater is dedicated to teaching improv for a wide array of people and growing talent for the metro-Philadelphia improv scene through our extensive class offerings. At the center of our effort is the 8-week classes in our 4 level core curriculum. Here's how the core curriculum works:
LEVEL 101 - "Intro to Improvised Scenework": Students will learn the basic improv concept of “Yes, and..” and discover how a scene can be created through agreement. They will also learn important basic improv skills like: creating characters, establishing relationships, exploring scenes with objects and environment work. Students will then combine these skills to create fully improvised scenes with a partner.
LEVEL 201 - "Intermediate Improv & Scenework Techniques": Students will work the skills they were previously introduced to with more targeted exercises the help them explore the concepts of character, relationship, and environment on stage more deeply. They will also learn how to recognize and build on patterns to advance their scenes. Students will begin to learn elements of structure for performance and create fully improvised scenes with more than two performers.
LEVEL 301 - "Introduction to The Harold": Students will take their strong foundation in improvised scenework and learn to attach structure to their scenes for performance by learning "The Harold" - scenic improv's most famous and widely taught structure. They will build on their understandings of patterns and also learn to perform in scenes with large groups.
LEVEL 401 - "Advanced Improvisation": Improvisers will continue building on skills acquired in prior levels through use of new acting techniques and additional improv formats, with a heavy focus on individual attention for their instructor.
